ICD-10 Codes Update for 2021

The new/changed ICD-10 codes for 2021 have been published and became effective 10/01/2020.  While many changes are included in this update, one of the frequently used codes for Home Health, N18.3 – Chronic Kidney Disease – Stage 3, has been divided into three (3) separate codes. They are as follows:

  • N18.30- Chronic Kidney Disease stage 3 unspecified

  • N18.31- Chronic Kidney Disease- stage 3a

  • N18.32- Chronic Kidney Disease- stage 3b

Any claim obtaining a date of service 10/01/20 or later will require the revised 2021 code.

The N18.3 code was revised to give more specificity and to capture more stage detail. This was due to kidney disease being asymptomatic just prior to kidney failure and to help identify the need for kidney replacement therapy.
